Conversation analysis is an approach to the study of social interaction and natural conversation, involving both verbal and non-verbal conduct in various conventional situations. The ethnomethodological approach to conversation analysis (CA) originated with Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974, 1977). CA researchers aim to determine study participants’ methods of turn-taking, constructing sequences of utterances across turns, employing gaze and movement, and identifying and repairing problems.
CA research findings can be applied to commercial products such as voice assistants and conversational user interfaces, in order to improve the ability of the technology to hold a natural conversation with a human.
